The Baldrige Excellence Framework Promotes Results

"The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, which highlights customer satisfaction, workforce empowerment, and increased productivity, has come to symbolize America’s commitment to excellence.”
— William J. Clinton

The foundation for our PENW Path to Excellence Program is the Baldrige Excellence Framework, which includes the Criteria for Performance Excellence, core values and concepts, and guidelines for evaluating an organization’s processes and results. Founded over 30 years ago by then-Secretary of Commerce Malcolm Baldrige, the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program focuses on helping American companies compete in an increasingly competitive global market.

Building role models for national and global organizations

Today, the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program is still the most valuable program we have to strengthen the economic health of our local communities and states. Last year, twenty-four organizations from a wide range of sectors and U.S. states submitted applications for the 2017 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Demonstrating the relevance and value of the Baldrige Excellence Framework to all organizations. This year 27 organizations have submitted applications for the 2018 Baldrige Award cycle including 14 health care organizations, five education organizations, six nonprofit organizations, and two small businesses.

The Baldrige Performance Excellence Program is managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in cooperation with the private sector. The program continuously updates the Baldrige Excellence Framework, raises awareness about the importance of performance excellence in driving the U.S. and global economy, provides organizational assessment tools and criteria, and develops and educates leaders.

Thousands of organizations worldwide use the Baldrige Excellence Framework, which is revised bi-annually to reflect the latest proven business practices leading to improved performance and sustainable results. This proven improvement framework offers organizations an integrated leadership guide to key management areas, including strategy, operations, data and information, and results. The next edition of the Baldrige Excellence Framework will be published in early 2019.
