 Experience the Power of Baldrige

Being a Performance Excellence NW (Baldrige) Examiner is a fabulous opportunity to receive an in depth understanding of the nationally recognized standard for performance excellence, the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria. It is an experience rich in both breadth and depth of exposure to the elements contained in “world-class” organizations.

Individual Benefits of Becoming a PENW Examiner

Being a PENW Examiner provides you with the management and leadership skills and training that provide an understanding of the entire organization, its strengths and opportunities for improvement, so that you are more prepared to apply these principles of excellence in your organization. Examiners gain an understanding of how customer needs and requirements are linked to strategic plan, job design, employee training and development, and to the key organization product and service delivery processes. Many view becoming an Examiner as the equivalent of obtaining a masters degree in performance management. In addition to the learning experience, it is a great resume builder. State and National Quality Award Examiners will receive 1.5 RU credit per year (maximum 4.5) for their "Committee" work by the American Society of Quality. Many Examiners appreciate the opportunity to commit their expertise to helping other organizations improve by providing the organization with valuable feedback. Through this process, Examiners directly commit to the PENW mission of making Washington State a better place to live, learn, and work through the use of the Baldrige Criteria. Below is just a sample of past examiner testimonials

Employer Benefits of Having PENW Examiners in your Workforce

An employer gains significant benefit from its employees being PENW Examiners. Your Examiner employees are taught the skills to better understand how customer needs and requirements are linked to strategic plan, job design, employee training and development, and processes by which the organization delivers it service. Examiners learn how performance excellence attributes can be applied within your organization by recognizing the organization strengths and opportunities for improvement.

"There is no activity that will bring a better understanding of your organization than through being an examiner. Every question you ask in the process, you ask not only about the applicant but about yourself. The value of that insight and understanding has been immeasurable in my quest to continuously improve our organization."Mark Rogers, Director, Derivative Airplane Programs, The Boeing Company

"Much can be said about becoming involved in the action as opposed to sitting in the bleachers. I personally chose to become an examiner to provide an example to the organization and to demonstrate my commitment to the WSQA journey. The results were so much more – the results are so much more – the results will be so much more."John Lee, Director, Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs

Time Commitment

There are various Examiner certification levels available with the time commitment varying from 44 to 200 hours over the course of a year. While the time commitment is significant, the rewards far outweigh the work.
